Join us, as we explore the fascinating world of sound and light and learn how advances in digital technologies are expanding the options for designers in both disciplines. Nick Boulter is the Associate Principal | Acoustic and Theatre Consulting, Arup and Rebecca Cadorin is Senior Lighting Designer, Arup.

Lighting context

Lighting plays a significant role within the built environment, integrating with and enhancing other disciplines. It’s a multifaceted discipline, incorporating a mixture of art, science and technology that bring designs to life.

Rebecca will describe how we perceive light + colour and how it can be used to entice strong emotions and reactions, as well as impact our cognitive performance, our health + wellbeing and social behaviours.

Attendees will learn:

  • Understanding the role that lighting plays in built environment

  • How light is described and measured

  • Incorporating Daylight + Artificial lighting

  • The fundamental lighting principles

  • New digital techniques + tools in modelling of lighting project: Lighting Vulnerability Assessment, HDR Imaging, B.UX

Acoustic Context

Nick will describe how we perceive sound and noise and the physical principles that govern how the built environment affects our sonic experiences. The talk will be supplemented with examples and demonstrations.  Recent advances in digital techniques in acoustic design will also be discussed and how these are being used to involve users in the decision-making process in building design and environmental noise mitigation.

  • The fundamental acoustic properties of materials

  • How sound behaves in rooms

  • How noise propagates outside

  • New digital techniques in modelling of acoustic environments

Nick Boulter

Nick Boulter is an acoustician who has more than 40 years of practical experience in building and environmental acoustics.  For 30 of those years, Nick has worked for Arup, leading acoustic design teams based in Hong Kong, Cambridge, Singapore and Melbourne during that time. He has a particular interest in education – both education buildings and educating building practitioners in acoustic principles.

Rebecca Cadorin

Rebecca Cadorin is a senior lighting designer with the Arup Sydney lighting team. Rebecca and the Arup team work on a range of multi-disciplined lighting projects, from large scale infrastructural, urban renewal and commercial work, through to high end fashion boutiques and intimate art programs.
