Zero Carbon Buildings - CPD Webinar – 2.5 formal CPD points
In his most recent book… A life on Our Planet… David Attenborough describes the rate of decline of our planet in the following terms:
1937 - global population 2.3 billion, carbon in the atmosphere 280 parts per million, remaining wilderness 66%
2020 - global population 7.8 billion, carbon in the atmosphere 415 parts per million, remaining wilderness 35%.
At this rate, Attenborough predicts that over the coming years, our planet will face irreversible damage that will fundamentally change the way we live, for the worse…
“The next few decades represent a final opportunity to build a stable home for ourselves and restore the rich, healthy, wonderful world that we inherited from our distant ancestors. Our future on the planet, the only place as far as we know where life of any kind exists, is at stake
David Attenborough…A Life on Our Planet, 2020
We are now living in the times of a global emergency. Reducing carbon emissions is a global priority.
The building and construction industry are responsible for 40% of global carbon emissions and a significant proportion of this is the so-called ‘embodied carbon’ - the carbon emissions associated with creating our buildings and infrastructure.
While there are some encouraging signs of action to reverse the above trends (this week, Australia’s 6th largest energy user, Woolworths announced that it will power all of its operations - including its 3300 stores – with renewable energy by 2025) there are still thousands of average buildings getting built each year.
David Clarke, Director at leading ESD Engineers, Cundall comments….
’No one will admit that they churn out business as usual. But if everyone is innovative and sustainable why are we still seeing unshaded full height glass boxes reliant on air-conditioning to be comfortable being built everywhere….”
As project creators, architects, engineers and builders have a a critical role to play in setting the framework and systems to achieve zero carbon outcomes for construction projects.
Join us for a webinar on December 15 with Andrew Thompson ESD leader, Cundall, Stephen Choi, Living Building Challenge Manager. Frasers Property and Nick Alsop, Senior Manager, Market Engagement, Green Building Council of Australia.
Our panel will list the prerequisites for construction professionals to meet zero carbon targets and will showcase projects, from across Australia, that have achieved zero carbon outcomes.
Attendees will learn:
Explain the effects of zero carbon & whole carbon footprint of buildings on environment
Describe the design process involved to reduce energy consumption in buildings
Describe the process for incorporating renewables and low carbon technologies into construction
Explain the process involved in reducing upfront embodied carbon in construction
Describe the benefits of a circular approach to design and building
