Designing with Steel - 2.5 Formal CPD Points

Webinar features a detailed case study of the Western Sydney Airport by project engineers, Arup on how the innovative use of steelwork helped to achieve the architectural vision and functional requirements of a 21st century airport

Steel is both structurally versatile and adaptable with inherent advantages including speed of construction, safety, strength, & recyclability and is the first-choice material of many contemporary architects.

By better understanding steel as a material and learning where and how it can be utilised to optimal advantage, architects, engineers and building professionals can:

  • Expand the boundaries of what can be achieved in their designs

  • Create buildings that lead to more sustainable outcomes minimising the impact on resources and the environment

  • Exert a strong influence on the detailing of structures in buildings

  • Design buildings for re-use of from the outset - initial design embodies principles that enhance a building’s reuse potential.

Join our expert panel of engineers and architects for a CPD webinar that will look in detail at designing with steel. Talking points will include:

Innovation in Steel Design (case study of Western Sydney International Airport) by Arup & Fielders Design Solutions Group

  • The Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) named after the pioneering aviator Nancy Bird Walton is Western Sydney’s first airport, reflecting over 40 years in the planning.

  • WSI is uniquely Australia’s newest greenfield airport with the distinction of offering a 24/7 operation.

  • The masterplan sets a clear framework for incremental future expansion and is a major investment that will help reposition Sydney and Australia as a global destination comparable to international airports worldwide.

NCC and Regulations

  • Material specification of steel structures – getting in right

  • NCC update - fire resistance of building elements - steel columns & beams

  • Warranties and life cycle costs of products.

  • Australian steel v’s overseas steel

Design

  • Architects and Engineers case studies from innovative projects

  • Steel integration with other materials – timber, concrete & glass

  • Detailing methods – tools and software

  • Case studies presented by Simon Knot featuring innovative use of steel design on BKK projects

Sustainability

  • Designing steel for reuse – embracing circular economy principles·

  • Environmental status of products - low carbon and green steel

  • Innovations and new products – what does the future look like?

Our Expert Presenters/Panel

Natalie Dumbrell

Senior Structural Engineer (Arup)

Natalie Dumbrell is a senior structural engineer who has worked at Arup for over 15 years, with extended assignments in the Sydney, London and Milan offices. She has a broad range of design experience, from stadia to iconic high rise, heritage to city changing projects such as the Nancy Bird Walton International Airport, where she led the team designing levels 2 and 3 of the terminal building. She applied innovation and new technology to successfully deliver this part of a highly complex and collaborative project.

Michaela Brown

Senior Structural Engineer (Arup)

Michaela Brown is a senior structural engineer who has successfully led and delivered large complex projects both from Sydney and London and across multiple sectors over the last 19 years with Arup. Many of the key projects in her career have been steel framed structures including One Shelly Street, Qatar National Museum and more recently she has been the structural lead for Sydney Modern Art Gallery steel package, where she developed and delivered a world class architecturally exposed steel structure that is both elegant and efficient. Her role on Western Sydney Airport has been package lead for both the expansive steel roof and the steel framed fixed linked bridges that are connected to the terminal. Michaela drove an optimised and innovative design solution that was seamlessly integrated with the many other services and design interfaces that are required for an international airport.

Marko Stankovic

National Engineering Manager (Fielders DSG)

Marko Stankovic is the National Engineering Manager for the Fielders Design Solutions Group (DSG). Marko was involved from the concept stage of the Western Sydney Airport through detailed design and construction providing technical support on the innovative composite steel solution to the relevant stakeholders.

Phil Gardiner

Principal Director (WSP)

Phil has 40 years’ experience in the provision of engineering consultancy in the Property & Buildings sector and previously led Irwinconsult for 15 years, an organisation that WSP acquired a few years ago. His experience includes low/medium and high rise commercial and residential developments, industrial, sporting, educational and healthcare facilities. Phil is known for his innovative and lateral design solutions with a project base across Asia, US and Australian mainland States

Tim Boulton

Director (Enstruct)

Tim has emerged as a leading structural engineer in Australasia via his involvement in the successful delivery, over the past decade, of a number of landmark building projects. Most recently, he led the design and site phase for the award winning office tower 1 Bligh Street, Sydney. His approach to building design is underpinned by a strong grasp of first principles, an in depth knowledge of materials and his exceptional ability to apply advanced computer analysis, design and documentation packages.

Simon Knott

Principal - BKK Architects

Simon heads architectural and multi-disciplinary design teams and builds relationships with clients. His experience includes infrastructure, public, cultural, multi-residential, urban design, masterplanning and educational projects. He has worked extensively for many Victorian Government entities. Simon has worked extensively in design advocacy. This has been through his many roles in broadcast and print media, and more formally in government design review positions. He is a founding member of the Shire of Mornington Design Advisory Panel (DAP) and has been a contributing member for 15 years continuously. He was a member of the Office of the Victorian Government Architect Design Review Panel for over four years.
