Sydney Opera House - A Story of Endurance in Design
The Sydney Opera House is a tale of endurance.
A troubled and lengthy birth offset by a beloved and enduring design.
In 2015 ARM Architecture were set the task of renewing the Concert Hall, the largest venue within the building and the culmination of the Sydney Opera House’s Decade of Renewal.
The brief was complex involving acoustics, accessibility and functionality upgrades all within a World Heritage Listed global icon.
Working closely with dedicated team of consultants including Arup structures and Design 5 heritage architects a seven-year journey unfolded requiring perseverance, patience and detailed research to ensure the interventions made addressed not only the briefed requirements but were also befitting of the legacy of Jørn Utzon and Peter Hall.
Join us for a special live "studio" webinar with lead architect, Andrew Hayne (ARM Architecture), Engineer, Xavier Nuttall (Arup) and Heritage Advisor Alan Croker (Design 5).
Meet the Experts
Andrew Hayne | ARM Architecture
Andrew started at ARM as a student and then a graduate back when it was a smaller firm of 15 or 20 people. It was a nine-year apprenticeship and he got to work on good projects like the National Museum of Australia, Melbourne Central and the MTC Southbank Theatre. Andrew believes that with design "... you’re always learning, looking, seeing what’s out there, what’s been done before, what’s new. And you also learn on the job from good people who’ve been around a long time....I've always worked in firms where design is the primary focus. At ARM, the realities of fees and things won’t stop us from doing whatever it takes to get the right design.
Xavier Nuttall | Arup
Xavier leads structural design teams to deliver creative design solutions for the most challenging projects, with a strong focus on digital innovation and complex geometry. Xavier collaborates with Architects and Contractors to develop well-coordinated, efficient and elegant structures. This strategy, combined with a strong focus on both multi-disciplinary and digital design, enables Xavier to develop innovative and effective structural solutions.
